Dr. Johan Sundberg has been a premier voice researcher for over 50 years, and his research in acoustics and physiology of the singing voice, music perception, and theory of music performance has deeply influenced our profession. Originally a musicologist, Sundberg early turned to acoustical aspects of music, starting with a doctoral dissertation (1966) on organ pipes. Since then the singing voice has been a primary research topic. He has published a great number of articles and book chapters on various aspects of singing, including resonance, vocal fold function, breathing, choral singing, perception and expression in singing, in addition to a book on music acoustics. He has had extensive experience performing choral music, has studied singing with Dagmar Gustafson, and made his public debut with a Lieder recital on his 50th birthday. Sundberg had a chair in Music Acoustics at the Speech Music Hearing Department at KTH (Royal Institute of Technology), Stockholm, from 1979 to his retirement in 2001. In 1996 he became Doctor Honoris Causa at the University of York, UK. Sundberg is a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, the Swedish Acoustical Society, and a fellow of the Acoustical Society of America.
