Joan Melton has been a performer, vocal coach, and music director on productions in virtually all media for over six decades. Her teaching on in the integration of singing techniques and voice-movement training for actors, dancers, and body conditioning for voice across a wide range of genres has impacted teachers and performers in the US, UK, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Australia and New Zealand. Author of six books, including One Voice: Integrating Techniques across Performance Disciplines, and Singing in Musical Theatre: The Training of Singers and Actors, Dr. Melton’s extensive research connects principles of voice production and physical conditioning to training for multiple performing genres. Since 2007, she has coached for NY Classical Theatre productions of Shakespeare in City parks, and more recently, has written original music for Shakespeare@, based in Jersey City, NJ. Her One Voice Centre for Integrative Studies, co-founded with Performing Arts Medicine specialist, Jennie Morton, provides an annual intensive course along with on-demand instruction throughout the year.

In her own words: …it takes getting out of our own little corner to see the links from one discipline to another. Long-held views can change—and that’s scary—and what is “true” today may be only partly true or transformed tomorrow. So we must be daring. We must actually listen to colleagues, address the information gaps, and follow threads we never before considered—because staying put is simply not an option.
