Vocal Arts DC AATS Award for Mentorship and Support of the Art Song Vocal Arts DC is dedicated to celebrating and advancing the art song recital. The nonprofit organization, founded in 1990, provides a platform for artists to share their personal and cultural stories through song, and aims to foster a deeper appreciation for the genre through education, community engagement, and the creation of new work. Vocal Arts DC goes into schools with local professional singers, sometimes with the featured artists themselves, to perform and discuss the songs and the texts. They are escorted by Elizabeth Daniels, former NATS Master Teacher. Voice teachers at local universities are contacted to offer free tickets to students, which are provided by a subscriber. Vocal Arts DC commissions new works, the most recent by Jasmine Arielle Barnes on texts of Langston Huges, Claude McKay, and Barnes herself. Vocal Arts DC celebrates the power of song to connect, reflect, and inspire.
