Scholarship graduate of the Juilliard School. Founding member, New York Pro Musica. Soloist with New York Philharmonic, Chicago Symphony, San Francisco Opera. Sang Oberon in Covent Garden premiere of Britten's Midsummer Night's Dream. Recording for Decca, Columbia, RCA Victor, and Lyrichord Discs. Thomas Hunter Professor Emeritus of Music, Hunter College of City University of New York. Now retired. Current activities: lectures, master classes, interviews, vocal consultations. Russell Oberlin is the subject of a doctoral dissertation: "Russell Oberlin, His Life and His Voice" by Constantinos Yiannoudes, submitted to and accepted by the Graduate Faculty in Music of the City University of New York.

Member recordings

  • Two recent CD reissues of recordings made in the 1950's includes John Blow's An Ode on the Death of Mr. Henry Purcell and Henry Purcell Songs and Airs on Video Artists International (VAI) and a Deutsche Grammophon release "Russell Oberlin, Handel Arias"
  • A VAI DVD has also been released of two television programs, a CBS Camera Three presentation featuring opera arias of Handel and Benjamin Britten and a CBC recital program of songs with harpsichord and piano accompaniment. Also on this DVD is a half-hour recent interview.
